Are your manuals current? Referencing the correct manual is the foundation to abstracting. The following are the current versions of the manuals used for abstracting and will be updated quarterly for your convenience.

  • Solid tumor rules – applicable for 2018+ cases; 2021+ cutaneous melanoma; 2023+ for other sites

    • this is specific to SEER states (Ohio is NOT a SEER state), however, portions of this manual is very helpful for abstracting in general, such as Appendix C: Site Specific Coding Modules w/ direct links to Solid Tumor Rules, coding helps, and clarifications to STORE’s surgery codes
    • Due to STORE manual reduction in 2021 several data items are no longer covered in the STORE manual but can be found in the SEER coding manual

  • NCCN Guidelines

    • Not a registry manual per se but very useful for understanding workup and treatment regimens
    • NCRA has an introduction and step-by-step guide video to using the NCCN guidelines, initially presented at the NCRA 2024 conference: https://www.cancerregistryeducation.org/best-practices (scroll down to “Abstracting and Coding Mini Learning Shorts” section and it is the presentation titled “Does Your Cancer Registrar Toolkit Include the NCCN Guidelines?”
